Best Demonstration Award

SOMA team awarded with Certificate of Best Demonstration Award

After three years of research in the field of self-organizing multimedia architecture, developing several applied research case studies and a working prototype entitled "LOOK2" with our industrial partner ASFINAG Maut Service GmbH, the LOOK2 team was awarded with the "Certificate of Best Demonstration Award" at this year's IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME). ICME is the flagship multimedia conference and a perfect place to demonstrate research and development (R&D) results together with industrial partners. It serves as a forum to promote the exchange of the latest advances in multimedia technologies, systems, and applications from both the R&D perspectives of the circuits and systems, communications, computer and signal processing communities.
Lakeside Labs' research manager Dr. Roland Tusch and researcher Dipl.-Ing. Felix Pletzer received the award with pleasure. Dr. Tusch said visibly touched: "This is yet another confirmation for our excellent group work and we took remarkable international credit for our hard research efforts."

The scientists demonstrated their novel video-based real-time traffic event notification and verification system LOOK2. It generates fast and reliable traffic information about relevant traffic state and road condition changes on observed roads. It utilizes installed road-side sensors providing low-level traffic and environmental data, as well as video sensors which gain high-level traffic information from live video analysis. Spatio-temporal data fusion is applied on all available traffic and environmental data to gain reliable traffic information. This traffic information is published by a DATEXII compliant web service to a web-based traffic desk application. Road network and traffic channel operators receive real-time and relevant traffic event notifications by using this application. The system also enables a visual verification of the notified situations.

Best Paper Award

Researchers from the Institute of Networked and Embedded Systems (NES) were recently awarded the Best Student Paper Award at IEEE International Symposium on Robotic and Sensor Environments (ROSE 2011) in Montreal.
Award was the contribution of "incremental, and loop-independent Orthorectified mosaicking of Aerial Images Taken by micro UAVs" by Saeed Yahyanejad, Markus Quaritsch and Bernhard Rinner that has arisen in the context of the research on Collaborative Aerial Robots.

Best Poster Award

Helmut Lindner won the best student poster award at the Fifth International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems (IWSOS 2011) in Karlsruhe for his work on self-organizing mobile drones.

In catastrophic scenarios, wireless communication is an important mean for coordinating rescue and saving operations. However, in such situations, the standard communication infrastructure is often not available. One possibility to solve this problem would be the usage of helicopter drones as flying relay stations. For the positioning of the drones, we would have to cope with disturbances of wireless media (interference from other nets, signal fading, etc.), an unknown landscape, as well as the need to add or remove relay nodes as they need to recharge. Therefore, we propose an evolution-based algorithm for a self-organizing positioning of the drones.

EEEfCOM Award for Innovation

Lakeside Labs Researcher granted the EEEfCOM Award for Innovation 

A team of researchers from the University of Klagenfurt Prof. Dr. Mario Huemer, Dipl.-Ing. Christian Hofbauer - both Lakeside Labs and Dipl.-Ing. Alexander Onic as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Johannes Huber (University of Erlangen-Nuernberg) granted the EEEfCOM award for innovation 2010 in Berlin on November 24th.
They were awarded for the corporate development of the new digital information transfer matrix method "Unique Word OFDM".

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the dominating transmission practice in wireless as well as wired communication. For example used for DSL broadband, wireless LAN or in mobile communications. Currently the guard interval in OFDM transmission, which is needed to avoid intersymbol interferences, is filled with a cyclic prefix (CP). This depends on the transmitted message and is thus random. A novel technique utilizes a deterministic predefined sequence, that is called Unique Word (UW). This offers many advantages over the use of a CP, that need to be developed and researched and developed thoroughly.

In addition to this project, Prof. Dr. Mario Huemer and Dipl.-Ing. Christian Hofbauer researching in the Lakeside Labs projects "Cooperative Relaying in Wireless Networks" and "Energy-Efficient Power Management for Wireless Aplications".

The EEEfCom (Electrical and Electronic Engineering for Communication) Innovation Price was initiated in 2001 by Rohde & Schwarz, Agilent Technologies and Gerotron Communications to support especially innovative as well as practically relevant research in the field of communications technology and electronics.
The prize is aimed at promoting innovative, hands-on research and development. In addition, it serves to recognize and motivate engineers and scientists in the field of information transmission technology and electronics. The award acknowledges solutions from industry, research institutes and universities.

Best Student Paper Award

Matteo Agostinelli from the Institute of Networked and Embedded Systems (NES) in the University of Klagenfurt was given the award for best student publication of the conference at the IEEE MWSCAS (International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems). Agostinelli's work is funded by Lakeside Labs and implemented in close cooperation with Infineon.

His article "Non-Linear Control for Energy Efficient DC-DC Converters Supporting DCM Operation" is an innovative approach to energy efficient nonlinear control of DC-DC converters by taking advantage of special procedures to optimize efficiency at low load currents.

Agostinelli in his research examines different approaches to energy efficient DC-DC regulator (DC-DC converter), which are used in mobile devices. The reduction of energy consumption is here of enormous importance to increase battery life.

The renowned conference took place already for the 53rd time. 202 out of 466 submitted papers (of which 85 student contributions) were accepted as "oral presentations". The event took place from August 1 to August 4, 2010 in Seattle, USA.

The award makes it even clearer that application-oriented and technology-oriented projects from Lakeside Labs / NES in cooperation with industry partners lead to outstanding scientific results.

FIT IT Award

An award celebration event of FIT IT, an Austrian research programme that focuses on high-quality research in the area of information and communication technology, took place in Vienna on March 5, 2009, with the participation of around 100 representatives of all Austrian players from industry and university in the field of electronics. The best projects submitted in the FIT-IT program from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG 2008 were awarded.

In the category "Embedded Systems" 12 projects were submitted, 6 were sponsored. The project application from the University Klagenfurt / Institute of Network and Embedded Systems (Univ.-Prof. Dr. techn. Bernhard Rinner) with TTTech and the Technical University of Vienna won the first price.

In the category "System on Chip" 7 projects were submitted, 4 were sponsored. The project application from the University Klagenfurt / Institute of Network and Embedded Systems (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Mario Huemer) with NXP, Technical University of Graz and FH Hagenberg received the first price.

ACM International Conference on Multimedia

As part of the SOMA-Project, Mathias Lux and Christoph Kofler presenting an achievement during the "ACM International Conference on Multimedia 2009". For their presentation Mathias and Christoph received the best presentation award for their "Dynamic presentation adaptation based on user intent classification" in the session of Multimedia Grand Challenge. 
The ACM Multimedia Conference 2009 took place from 19th to 23rd of October 2009 in Beijing, China. It is the worldwide premier multimedia conference and a key event to display scientific achievements and innovative industrial products.

Mathias Lux was successful twice. With his open-source project "Caliph & Emir" he won the 2009 ACM Multimedia Open Source Software Competition.
